Is the parent sponsorship program open for 2022?

Between October 12 and 20, 2022, invitations were issued to potential sponsors to apply. The deadline to apply has now passed and there will be a 2023 parent sponsorship coming soon.

How long does it take to sponsor my parent in Canada?

Parent sponsorship applications take approximately 24-36 months to process from start to finish. They are typically not processed much faster than 24 months, but can take longer, depending on the nature of your case.

When will Immigration open the 2023 Parent Sponsorship program?

Immigration Canada usually opens the Parent and Grandparent sponsorship program in the first quarter of the year. The latest plan detailing immigration levels for 2023-2025 indicates that Canada is aiming to issue permanent residence for over 28,000 parents and grandparents in each of the next three years. The exact  number for the targets for Parents and Grandparents sponsorships are 28,500 for 2023, 34,000 for 2024, and 36,000 for 2025. These are larger numbers than in previous years and immigration could change their regular timeframe for the draw.

Can my parents stay in Canada while waiting for the processing of the sponsorship?

Your parents can stay in Canada on a regular visitor visa or a super-visa during the processing of the application. The regular visa typically allows for a stay of six months while a Super-visa can allow a stay for one or two years. The visitor status can be extended in Canada before the expiry to provide maintained or implied status until a decision is rendered.

What are Common Grounds for Refusal of a Sponsorship Application?

Some common reasons for return of a Parent and Grandparent sponsorship application as incomplete or wholesale refusal are:
  • Failure to provide updated forms or fees.
  • Errors in information submitted.
  • Failure to provide supporting documentation and/or evidence.
  • Failure to meet the financial requirements to sponsor parent.

Can sponsored parents work in Canada?

Sponsored parents and grandparents become permanent residents of Canada, with all the benefits that come with it. This includes the right to live and work in Canada without restriction on location, time, or sector, as well as access to publicly-funded health care and other services.
