Express Entry Overview

Express Entry is the electronic management system for applying for permanent residency. It is not an immigration category but a system to facilitate the selection and processing of Canada’s economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and a portion of the Provincial Nomination Programs.

Applicants first make an ‘expression of interest’ in immigrating to Canada by registering a profile and, if they are eligible for at least one of the aforementioned programs, they then enter the Express Entry pool. Candidates from this pool will then receive an ‘invitation to apply’ under one of the programs when they meet or exceed the points threshold.

The points of each applicant, under the express entry system, is determined by: English proficiency scores, level of education, age, and other selection factors. The points threshold changes according to the latest draw held approximately every two weeks.

Points based category for foreign nationals who possess a high level of education and/or significant skilled work experience abroad.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade.

The Canadian Experience Class is for skilled workers who have skilled Canadian work experience and want to become permanent residents.

How Does The Program Work?

Under Canada's Express Entry system, first a profile is created, it will then be entered into a pool of candidates. An invitation to apply will be issued once the Applicant meets the points threshold.

Process

1) Creating a Profile

First, all potential candidates will create an Express Entry profile using an online platform that identifies their skills and qualifications, taking the form of an online resume.

All Express Entry profiles will be ranked against the other applicants in the system based on a variety of factors such as:

  •  Language proficiency in English and/or French

  • Education

  • Canadian work experience (if applicable), and other factors that indicate the candidate will be successful in Canada

2)  Express Entry Pool

After each profile in the system has been assessed, the candidates who meet the criteria of a federal economic program will be placed in the pool of candidates for Express Entry.

3) Invitation To Apply

If their application meets the minimum points threshold, the applicant will be issued an "Invitation to Apply," and will have 60 days to apply for permanent residence.

4)  Apply For Permanent

Residency

The successful candidate will then apply for permanent residence under:

  • Federal Skilled Worker program

  • Federal Skilled Trade program

  • Canadian Experience Class  or,

  • Provincial Nomination Program.

After being offered an invitation to apply applicants will still be required to meet the criteria of the program they are applying under.  The entire process of applying for permanent residence is completed using the online portal.
